Look out 2012.

3 days into the new year and I have already started checking off a "To Do" on my 2012 list.  As I packed up the Five Little Reasons into the Mamavan, I was slightly nervous, but mostly excited to be heading out today.

I dropped them off at my mums house and headed to the beach with my instructor.  My dad is an amazing man for his age.  Almost... ahem... 60 (ssshhhh), he is a very very fit man.  He has been windsurfing since I can remember and kitesurfing for close to a decade.  He, of course, was my first call when I thought about wanting to learn an extreme sport.

Now, I am not saying I am going to be a professional.  Heck, I am not even sure I will end up Kite Surfing for long, however, I wanted to try it.  Check it off a list.  Isn't that really what it is all about?

As we sat in my dad's office, he gave me the first lesson.  A theory lesson.  It is a dangerous sport.  There are things you have to learn.  Wind windows, how the kite works, how to be safe.

Then we got in the car and headed to the beach.  Well... the park first.  First lesson... how to rig up the kite.

After getting the hang of it with the short lines, I graduated to the longer lines.  This meant we had to head down to the beach, so as to miss landing crashing into the tree's!  A family having a wonderful beach picnic watched close by and I am sure had a few laughs at this girl trying her hardest to keep this kite in the sky.

After an hour and a half, we decided to call it a day.  The wind was dying and I am sure my mum was retreating with the Five Little Reasons.

When we arrived back to their house, I sat and showed the Five Little Reasons the photos.  They were in awe that their Mama was learning to Kitesurf!  Well... kite fly.

While the babies slept soundly, I enjoyed some time with the big two reasons.

Look closely at Lucy in the background!

The Five Little Reasons crashed on the way home and the sunshine has wiped me out.

I feel good about stepping out of my comfort zone today.  It wasn't as hard as I thought.

Look out 2012.  I can do anything.

  1. Wow, wow, wow!! I was only saying to the hubs a couple of weeks back that I would like to give this a *try*. I worry if I have the upper body strength and if I would panic and drown because I was being swept out to sea haha.
You are amazing..... Excited for the rest of your journey - I may just live my dream through you or you may just give me the courage to try it myself.

  2. Oh, go and have a go. My dad is wanting to start a Kitesurfing school. There aren't many around. He told me it is something he is looking into doing in the next year or two.

I guess the strength will come the more I go. As you can see - small kite today. Only 10-14knot winds. Wasn't much pull at all, but was perfect for learning how to do the figure 8 that is required. Was tricky, but after 1.5 hours, I think I had it.

Next step... bigger kite and stronger winds. Eek!

  3. Just SO admire your sterling efforts - if I wasn't a zillion years old and disabled I'd join you, although learning to ski on the Nerang at Carrara are still too fresh. lol

  4. That is so awesome! Good for you. It's easy to get stuck in a rut as a mummy... Good to do something fun and different. Your dad sounds pretty cool!

  5. So cool Dan!! Great pics too. I cannot wait to see you take to the surf.

Way to kick 2012's butt, by the way. :D
